Councillor James to be referred to JLP’s selection committee as Westmoreland Western standard-bearer
KINGSTON, Jamaica —The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Secretariat says it intends to refer Councillor for the Sheffield Division, Dr Garfield James, to its selection committee and central executive as its representative for Westmoreland Western in the upcoming general election.
The party made the announcement in a statement on Monday.
It said the referral is to be made following a selection exercise in the constituency on Sunday, which resulted in Dr James emerging with a majority of the votes.
The party’s general secretary, Dr Horace Chang, expressed thanks to the two participants in the selection, Dr James and sitting Member of Parliament Morland Wilson.
Chang says he is confident that unity will prevail among the JLP family in the constituency.
He said he remains confident in the candidate selection processes being deployed by the party, which present an opportunity for party workers and delegates to make their voices heard.
The processes involve a constituency audit, polling, consultation with workers and delegates, and a selection exercise.
Chang noted that the processes reiterate that democracy is alive and well in the JLP.
The party expressed gratitude to all workers and delegates who participated in the exercise.
