Di Unit celebrates 10 years
...returns to Badda Tuesdayz
After 10 years in the game as Di Unit sound system, owner Tall Man says the outfit has managed to stay relevant by adapting to new trends over the 10 years of its existence.
It’s current line-up includes popular MC and selector Bada Bling, Keno Russian, Little Rich, and Tall Man.
The entity will commemorate its 10th anniversary milestone later this month with the return of the popular weekly series Badda Tuesdayz.
“We have had some very good highlights, some ups and some downs, but through it all, we are grateful that we are still here,” Tall Man told the Jamaica Observer on Tuesday.
He said the sound struggled, like most entertainment practitioners, during the recent pandemic.
“During COVID, we were at our lowest point. We weren’t able to play at any events locally, we had a few overseas dates, and we had to reduce our prices to accommodate the patrons. But we managed to weather the storm by taking on several dates overseas and outside traditional markets as soon as the pandemic had passed,” shared Tall Man.
He is proud that the sound was able to make inroads in the Seychelles as well as at major events such as Reggae Sumfest, Sandz, Dream Weekend, and Brit Jam.
“We’ve played in Canada, the USA, the Caribbean, and in Europe. Playing in the Seychelles was a proud moment for us, as the first sound from out of Portmore to have accomplished that,” Tall Man shared.
He said being relevant has helped to keep the sound in the game.
“We stay relevant based on the fact that we adapt to the changes. We sometimes go into schools and grow with the crop of students, we let them grow to love us, and that’s why we continue to play at and support school events and initiatives such as school tours, and to also build a fan base at street dances and corporate events. We try to keep relevant with different age groups,” Tall Man said.
The members of Di Unit were a part of Flava Unit sound for several years before breaking away to start their own sound.
“Our style of play, ability to read a crowd, and our energetic MC Badda Bling’s ability to interact with a crowd are what set us apart from the competition,” said Tall Man.
