Clever run lands Digital One SVREL Trophy
In a thrilling finish, Digital One, trained by Gary Subratie, capitalised on a speed duel between California Crown and Bootylicious to win the $1.75-million Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL) Eighth Anniversary Trophy feature at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Ridden by Dane Dawkins, the four-year-old bay filly Digital One made a stunning comeback from off the pace to win the Graded Stakes/Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over five and a half furlongs (1,100m) by five and a half lengths. Making her seasonal debut, Digital One stopped the clock in 1:06.0 (22.4 x 47.1 x 59.3) minutes.
Digital One was well positioned in third place navigating the half-mile turn (800m), biding her time behind duelling leaders California Crown and Bootylicious, but as the leaders came off the turn, Digital One saw her chance. While California Crown and Bootylicious drifted wide, Digital One hugged the inside rails, maintaining a laser-straight course through to the wire.
Trainer Anthony Nunes saddled three winners on the nine-race card. He won with Brahma Bull (Tevin Foster) in the fourth race, Golden Syrup (Shane Richardson) in the sixth race, and Smart Trick (Shane Ellis) in the ninth and final event.
Racing continues on Saturday.
