Church, family of 2023 fatal crash victims hold prayer session ahead of driver’s sentencing
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — A prayer session was held ahead of the sentencing of 47-year-old Delroy Rodney, a taxi operator who pleaded guilty to five counts of causing death by dangerous driving in connection with a fatal crash in 2023.
Rodney will learn his fate when the case is called up after lunch break in the Westmoreland Circuit Court.
Police had reported that about 3:30 pm on November 13, 2023, Rodney’s taxi, with seven people on-board, was travelling towards Whitehouse when the vehicle it was travelling behind slowed down. The cab driver swerved, collided with a truck that was travelling in the opposite direction and ended up in a tree.
The passengers sustained serious injuries and were later pronounced dead at hospital.
Rodney was then arrested and charged by the police. He was later granted a $7 million bail bond by the court.
During the last court date in November, Justice Courtney Daye ordered a social inquiry report for Rodney and a victim impact statement from the relatives of the deceased.
