Trevoy Smith runs World U-20 lead at Western Champs
DESPITE running a world Under-20 leading and personal best 50.82 seconds to win the Class 1 Boys’ 400m hurdles at County of Cornwall Athletics Association’s Western Championships at G C Foster College of Physical Education and Sport on Saturday, Herbert Morrison Technical’s Trevoy Smith thinks he still has some more work to do.
Smith, who also won the Class 1 Boys’ 110m hurdles title earlier in the day when he ran 14.06 seconds (-1.4m/s), was one of several double champions as Green Island High’s Daynea Colstock also won the Class 1 Girls’ 100m hurdles and 400m hurdle Open double while Lacovia High’s Sabrina Dockery and Muschett High’s Shanoya Douglas won their respective sprint doubles.
Smith told the Jamaica Observer he was aiming at a sub 50.00 seconds time for the 400m hurdles as he beat his previous best of 50.92 seconds set at the National Junior Championships last summer.
“I am pleased with how I executed the final 120 metres,” he said. “I always have a big problem, a big issue, with the last 120 so knowing that I’m the fastest coming into race, I know nobody would be in front of me or anywhere near me so it was mainly mental — and I pushed through and I got the time well, the time range that I wanted.”
Muschett’s Shavoy Thompson was second in the 400m hurdles, running 52.54 seconds, with William Knibb’s Joshua Wint third in 53.63 seconds — all personal best times.
In the 110m hurdles, Reynaldo Johnson of St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) was second in 14.82 seconds and Shamare Hutchinson of William Knibb Memorial took third with 15.19 seconds.
Colstock, who retained her Western Relays 400m hurdles title a week earlier, ran 1:00.57 minutes to win the intermediate hurdles yesterday, beating favourite Rhianna Lewis of Rhodes Hall (1:00.63), and Jeneil Harding of Lacovia High (1:07.19).
In the sprint race, Colstock ran 14.94 seconds (-1.4m/s) to beat Martinea Senior of STETHS (17.34) and Cheryce Boyd of William Knibb (17.90s).
Dockery ran 11.49 seconds (-1.7m/s) to win the Class 1 Girls’ 100m, beating Brenea Grizzle of Green Island (12.73s), while Samaritan McEnuff of Petersfield was third in 12.98 seconds.
Dockery ran 24.25 seconds earlier to win the 200m, finishing ahead of Rihanna Allen of STETHS (24.74s) and Grizzle (26.12s).
Douglas, the World Under-20 200m bronze medallist, won the Class 2 Girls’ 100m in 11.53 seconds (-1.2m/s). Ronique Stewart of Rusea’s High was second in 12.31, and Mickelia Henlon of Muschett High was third in 12.48 seconds.
Douglas also won the 200m in 23.31 seconds (-0.4m/s), ahead of Mount Alvernia High’s Sharla Bell (25.62s) and Tishauna McDowell of Lacovia High, who clocked 26.20s.
