Road deaths up to 43 this year says ITA
Forty-three road users were killed in 40 fatal crashes up to Friday, February 14.
This is according to the latest weekly statistics revealed on Friday by the Island Traffic Authority (ITA). The statistics show that fatalities have decreased by 12 per cent while fatal crashes are down 11 per cent when compared to the similar period in 2024.
To date, 14 pedestrians, eight private motor car drivers and nine motorcyclists are numbered among the dead. Three pillion passengers and three passengers of private motor cars were also killed.
Pedestrians presently account for 33 per cent of the fatalities since the start of the year, motorcyclists account for 21 per cent and private motor vehicle drivers account for 19 per cent. Private motor vehicle passengers and pillion passengers each account for seven per cent of the road users killed since the start of the year.
Combined, vulnerable road users (pedestrians, pedalcyclists, motorcyclists and pillion passengers) account for 65 per cent of the road deaths so far.
The ITA said males have accounted for 79 per cent while females have accounted for 21 per cent of fatalities since the start of the year.
