7.6 magnitude quake shakes Caribbean, tsunami advisory issued
WASHINGTON, United States (AFP) — A magnitude 7.6 quake rattled the Caribbean Sea on Saturday evening about 130 miles (209 kilometres) off the coast of the Cayman Islands, setting off tsunami warnings, United States monitoring agencies said.
The earthquake struck sometime after 7:00 pm.
“Hazardous tsunami waves” set off by the quake were possible within 620 miles of the epicentre along the coasts of the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Honduras, Bahamas, Belize, Haiti, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua and Guatemala, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
The temblor struck at a shallow depth, the US Geological Survey said.
